Discovering Nerikomi: A Master Workshop with Jesus Minguez
Indian River Clay invites you to explore nerikomi in a two-day, hands-on workshop with master potter, Jesus Minguez. Nerikomi is a technique for creating color patterns in clay, similar to the glass pattern work known as millefiori. On day one, Jesus will demonstrate the nerikomi technique using slabs of different clays or clays colored with stains or oxides which are then stacked, folded and then sliced for use in hand-building a vessel – or neriage, a technique in which colored clays are wedged together to the point of creating marbled clay for use in wheel-thrown pottery. Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions and discuss the lamination techniques. On day two, participants will have the day to work on their own creations with advice and encouragement from Jesus, using colored clays and molds he provides. Participants will be able to keep the slump molds and have their pieces fired to be picked up later at the clay studio.
